10 JOURS DE FOLIE POUR CELEBRER LA NOUVELLE ANNEE DU CHAT, ENSEMBLE AVEC NOS AMIS DES ETHNIES DU NORD VIETNAM

“I have had an amazing and beautiful time and the motor trip has been so incredible!

The beautiful sceneries, the fact that it has been ten days intense living with the group and sharing such unique experiences has been mind blowing for me. Even more and with big respect for the projects we have visited and the big group of people connected to the projects that joined us, and the children.

It has been such an unforgettable journey which showed Vietnam in a way you’d never see on any other trip and at least for me it changed perspective on live. Thanx all for making the trip the way it was!”

1. 28 Janvier 2011 (Tet moins 6) : Ha Noi – Na Khan. 150km, ~4-5 heures

FIESTA !!

2. 29 Janvier 2011 (Tet moins 5) : Na Khan – Cao Bang. 170 km, ~5 heures

3. 30 Janvier 2011 (Tet moins 4) : Cao Bang – Ban Gioc – Ha Lang. 130km, ~4 heures

4. 31 Janvier 2011 (Tet moins 3) : Ha Lang – Ba Be. 170km, ~6 heures

5. 01 Février 2011 (Tet moins 2) : Ba Be – Green Vietnam. 140km, ~5 heures

10 CRAZY DAYS CELEBRATING THE YEAR OF THE CAT WITH OUR PLURI-ETHNIC FRIENDS OF NORTH VIETNAM

Niek, member of the TET Tour 2011 team.

For 15 years already, the Têt Lunar New Year tour is the opportunity for festive reunions with our friends from the ethnic minorities of North Vietnam. This trip is now an ongoing institution creating new custom. The motivation of this event is to give travelers from all around the world the opportunity to meet our hosts at a particular time in their rural lives, the New Year, but also to bring the opportunity to each of those families to meet each other as they travel with us, every day expanding our group.

Itinerary

THE ITINERARY, 15th Edition 2011:

1. 28th of January 2011 (Tet -6) : Ha Noi – Na Khan. 150km, ~4-5 hours

A small stage to start with to get ourselves warmed up and to domesticate the beasts. Our first stop – Na Khan, a small Tay village on the edge of the National Park Ba Be – is a total change of scenery from the capital, Hanoi.

Enjoy a warm family welcome, and the wonderful cooking from our host Mrs. Bong, the best cook in the world. FIESTA !!

2. 29th of January 2011 (Tet -5) : Na Khan – Cao Bang. 170 km, ~5 hours

The journey starts getting easier as we get used to the rhythms of the winding mountain roads.  Heading towards the Chinese border region, we cross several breathtaking mountain passes as our traveling crew moves further into North East Vietnam.

Tonight, it’s the Cao Bang city night tour ! We’ll eat and drink our way through the town’s small bars and restaurants. Night in the hotel.

3. 30th of January 2011 (Tet -4) : Cao Bang – Ban Gioc – Ha Lang. 130km, ~4 hours

A relaxing trip today; a dream tour, like cruising through a Chinese water-colour. We picnic at Ban Gioc waterfalls, one of the tallest in North Vietnam before heading to the small village of Ha Lang where we spend the night next to China.

It’s a first for us, and for the village also, which is currently unknown to the tourist circuit.

4. 31st of January 2011 (Tet -3) : Ha Lang – Ba Be. 170km, ~6 hours

One of the most beautiful and diverse stages of the tour. For the last 60 km, we suggest a change of tracks (if you dare), or we can stick to the smaller and easier trails; anyway,  both options are beautiful.

Tonight we are at the Tay’s lair, guests of Mr. Manh and his family, chief of the lake boatmen. And also the best cook in the world ! It’s been stated already that we’ll have one hell of a feast tonight ! So let’s celebrate !

5. 1st of February 2011 (Tet -2) : Ba Be – Green Vietnam. 140km, ~5 hours

Short stage, but some beautiful tracks, through 2 mountain passes.

We start the morning softly with a boat trip on the lake, stopping to say hello to ÔNG PIRATE, THE jungle cook. We have lunch with him in the Dau Dang waterfalls. We’ll hit the road again in the early afternoon, arriving at the GREEN VIETNAM fruit project before night falls. We are welcomed by our friends and partners, a family of passionate farmers who introduce us to their magnificent groves.

And tonight we enjoy a delicious meal thanks to Mrs Huyen, a wonderful cook (actually simply the best in the world!), and dynamic manager of the project with her husband Mr. Quang. And for the evening’s program? Fiesta !

6. 2nd of February 2011 (Tet -1 and Eve) : Green Vietnam – Vu Linh. 60km, ~2 hours

Today, it’s TET new year’s eve, it will be hot !

Quiet morning with our friends from GREEN VIETNAM before we hit the road again, or better said, the tracks, if the weather is fine, to get to our very own sustainable eco-tourism and development project – LAVIEVULINH !

A warm welcome from the project’s apprentices and host family is followed up by lunch and some well-deserved chilling out on the terrace.  Our location on the edge of Thac Ba lake, the largest lake in North Vietnam, lends itself to afternoon treks in the village or boating on the lake.  All the while the grill is heating up, as the Tiger gives way for the CAT. Tonight it’s the Tet Fiesta!

7. 3rd of February 2011 – First day of the CAT year.

Some loosen up, others sleep off the previous night’s festivities… the rest learn how to live in the Dao style, the main ethnic culture of the region. Paddling on the lake, or cooking wild banana flowers followed up by a well-deserved meal to be in great shape for… It’s TET for God’s sake !

8. 4th of February 2011 (Tet +2) : Vu Linh – Mai Chau crossing Song Thao, the valley of the lacquer ‘SAIGNEURS’. 240km. ~7 hours

Farewelling our friends in LAVIEVULINH we head East, then straight South along the Black river. A very diverse stage which leads us to Mai Chau, the land of our friends and local Thai people, where our traveling party continues it’s Tet celebrations.

We stop halfway for lunch with the 2 uncles, the last descendants of the Lacquer ‘SAIGNEURS’, providing us with a rate opportunity to visit the last plantations of this traditional and prestigious craft which will unfortunately end in the near future.

9. 5th of February 2011 (Tet +3) : Mai Chau – Ban Hieu. 50km, ~5 hours

Short stage in terms of kilometres, but a challenging stage nonetheless. Wild tracks await us in Pu Luong, the National Park that we cross on the way to Ban Hieu village. If the track is slippery, this stage could become quite physical. But we are ready! We have all our food and supplies for the long day ahead packed into our bags.  The rewards for our efforts: soaking up the Parks lush landscapes and the memorable interactions with the local Thai and Muong people. It’s the last evening of the tour, but not the least. It will be a big one!

10. 6th of February 2011 (Tet +4) : Last length: Ban Hieu – Ha Noi. 200km, ~5-6 hours

Long stage, a bit more of track riding in the morning to get out of the park and then we find back the roads that lead to the capital. Stay focused !
